St. James’s Place team wins second tournament in a month in Manchester

Mon 18 Sep 2017

The St. James’s Place team Flyin’ Lions, a corporate softball team from the financial management industry, won their second tournament in a month on Saturday 19 August at the St. James’s Place Foundation Family Fun Day & Softball Tournament, played at Bowdon Rugby Club in Altrincham.

Following their previous success at the fourth annual Manchester Insurance Institute Tournament earlier in August, the Flyin’ Lions showed that they are not only fair-weather corporate softballers but proper hardcore, die-hard softballers, remaining unbeaten throughout the day despite damp and drizzly weather in South Manchester.

Five teams competed in the tournament: Bowdon Rugby Club, Capstone, Wayne’s World, JMW and the hosts and winners the Flyin’ Lions.  The teams were made up of St. James’s Place employees, friends and families, plus a few helpers from the Manchester Softball League.

Alexa Martinez, Head of Business PA at St. James’s Place, organised the event alongside BaseballSoftballUK, and the result was an exciting family fun day featuring five bouncy castles, a post-tournament throwing competition, a raffle and a BBQ, all of which raised money for charity.

Games were timed, with 20-minute innings, and rules were simplified to cater for the brand-new players and to keep games flowing.

Final standings

Final standings were:

1 – Flyin’ Lions
2 – Capstone
3 – Bowdon Rugby Club
4 – JMW
5 – Wayne’s World

Alexa Martinez said: “The St. James’s Place Foundation’s first-ever Family Fun Day & Softball Tournament was an all-around success despite the on-again, off-again summer showers.  Everyone who participated in the softball tournament really enjoyed themselves and didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits.

“This year being the 25th anniversary of St. James’s Place, the Foundation has pledged to double-match any amount raised.  There have been over 15 fund-raising events that have taken place in Manchester, yet none of these have been focused around families.  So, I thought it was time to do something for the families and provide an activity for the adults at the same time – thus, the idea of a Family Fun Day & Softball Tournament was born.

“Over 60 families came out to show their support for the Foundation,” Alexa added, “and overall the day raised £450, which equals around £1,350 after double-matching.  We are delighted with the turnout, the event and the feedback we have received so far, and now have plans to run this annually.

“A special thank you to BSUK for helping me spread the love of softball and thank you to all the families who came out to show their support.  Here’s to the start of a great relationship with BSUK and many more family-oriented fundraising activities.”

BSUK North West Regional Coach Linni Mitchell said, “We are always grateful to the members of the Manchester Softball League who come down to assist at these corporate tournaments to umpire, play and support teams with base coaching.  Fun tournaments like this are the perfect way to get people interested in softball and everyone has a laugh when they’re on the diamond.  The tournament was a great success, and we are already looking forward to working with Alexa and St. James’s Place to expand next year’s event.”
