GoSketch School Programme Expanding this Summer!
Fri 14 May 2021
BaseballSoftballUK, the national development body for baseball and softball, is excited to announce that the GoSketch Baseball Softball programme across Sussex will be expanding during the summer term.
The GoSketch programme allows groups of young people to learn how to play baseball and softball while also putting their creative design skills to work. Each group works together to create their logo and team names, which are engraved on bats and feature on team kit for each young person taking part in the programme. This helps the participants form a strong connection not only to baseball and softball, but also to assist in the development of their design skills.
Following the successful delivery of the programme in 2019-20 in Horsham at the Milias School, BSUK has again worked with Future Proof, who created the GoSketch concept, and Active Sussex to secure Satellite Club funding for up to 20 weeks of sessions at two schools - Moulsecoomb Primary School in Brighton and The Eastbourne Academy in Eastbourne. BSUK has facilitated the link between the school and the programme, delivered by a local coach, and local clubs, and will provide logistical support with coaches, as well as equipment and apparel.
A key component of the Satellite Club funding is engaging young people who, for a variety of reasons, may not have had the same access and opportunities to sport in the past. The goal of the satellite clubs is to:
- Help young people become more active.
- Involve under-represented groups in sport.
- Align with the England Chief Medical Officer’s recommendation of delivering moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity.
- Get more young people more active and create regular activity habits.
- Be led by young people including involving young people in decision making.
Chelsea Jenkinson, one of the Physical Education teachers at The Eastbourne Academy is incredibly excited about the programme, saying, “GoSketch is an excellent programme to engage less active students in physical activity combined with art and design. Students are enthusiastic and really enjoying trying something different. If you struggle to get students to participate in exercise then I strongly recommend taking part in the GoSketch initiative.”
Patrick Knock, BSUK South East Development Manager, added, "I'm so pleased that, thanks to funding from Active Sussex, we've been able to work again with Future Proof, these two schools, the local clubs in Sussex, and most importantly the young people on the GoSketch programme. This will be a great way to introduce young people to the enjoyment that baseball and softball have to offer them as well as introduce them to the fantastic local club opportunities there are in the sport."
