BaseballSoftballUK Seeks Head of Performance Systems

Tue 19 Oct 2021

BaseballSoftballUK is excited to announce that the organisation is accepting applications for the role of Head of Performance Systems. This brand-new role will involve working closely with the GB Women’s Fastpitch Senior Team and the GB Baseball Men’s Senior Team and be pivotal in preparing both teams to qualify for the 2028 LA Olympic Games.

We’re looking for an ambitious, motivated individual who want to make an impact and hit the ground running, who is excited by a challenge, and who believes strongly that baseball and softball can thrive in the UK and in the Olympics.

The role

The Head of Performance Systems will be responsible for enhancing and developing a sustainable, robust, and elite talent system for both the GB Softball and GB Baseball programmes, with a specific focus on future Olympic participation. The role is new and there is considerable scope to develop a world-leading programme. Working with both the British Softball Federation and the British Baseball Federation, the Head of Performance Systems will be key to coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, including UK Sport, Sport England, the British Olympic Association, athletes and the British Athletes Commission, the BSUK Board, Senior Leadership Team and wider staff.

The Head of Performance Systems will join the Senior Leadership Team and will report directly to the CEO. The post will line manage a small staff team, consultants and third-party organisations providing services to the company.

The role would be suited to a performance system professional, an aspiring or an existing Performance Director.

The National Teams

GB Women’s Fastpitch Softball Senior Team

Through outstanding voluntary leadership over two decades, the GB Women’s Fastpitch Softball Senior programme has established itself as a world force, coming close to qualifying for Beijing 2008 and falling just shy of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Games despite having virtually no public investment since 2007.

When UK Sport funded the GB Women’s Softball Team through the Aspiration Fund in 2019, the target was to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Thanks to UK Sport funding, the team came within one game and a few runs from achieving this goal.

GB Softball, through BaseballSoftballUK, was the recipient of £288,750 in National Squad Support Funding from UK Sport in March 2021.

GB Men’s Baseball Senior Team

This summer, GB Baseball had the team’s best finish in European Competition (6th) in 14 years and is preparing to compete in next year’s World Baseball Classic Qualifiers (WBCQ). Four years ago, GB Baseball came within one win of their first World Baseball Classic (WBC) berth.

In 2016, the team GB lost to in the WBCQ, Israel, went on to perform well in the WBC and also won qualification to compete in Tokyo 2020. GB has shown depth and fight in its recent performances and believes it can exceed Israel’s recent rise.

Currently ranked 6th in Europe and 32nd in the world, the team has its sights set on qualifying for the World Baseball Classic and securing a place at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. GB Baseball aspires to win an Olympic medal in Brisbane 2032.

GB Baseball, through BaseballSoftballUK, was the recipient of £86,250 in National Squad Support Funding from UK Sport in October 2021.
